Louisiana Gear Up

Louisiana Gear Up

The purpose of Louisiana Gear Up is to prepare students with the academic and leadership skills beneficial to succeeding in postsecondary education upon graduation from high school.

In conjunction with The Louisiana Office of Financial Assistance (LOSFA), AHEC will conduct 5-day camps in participating southwest parishes. The current programs are located in Iberia Parish and Calcasieu Parish.

The Health Awareness Summer Camps will include an introduction to many health careers and health professionals in Primary Care, Allied Health, Complimentary Medicine and Public Health.

During the 5-day camp, students will take field trips, visit post-secondary schools, be trained in CPR/First Aid, and spend classroom time using the www.unlockmyfuture.org  website.  In addition, students may do simulated blood typing, dissection, fingerprinting, and learn to take vital signs.

Through this program we strive to influence students to pursue a career in one of the many health professions available. In addition, we hope to increase the students’ awareness of health disparities and enhance their academic learning and life skills while preparing them for success in a post-secondary school or college.
