Day with the Docs
The purpose of Day with the Docs is to allow high school students a chance to visit the LSU Health Sciences Center School of Medicine in New Orleans, spending the day with medical students and faculty members.

Day with the Docs gives student who are serious about becoming physicians, a chance to see what life is like as a medical student and get an up-close look at LSUHSC School of Medicine in New Orleans. Among other activities during this one-day event, the students tour the facility, interact with medical students, view emergency care skits, and participate in numerous hands-on activities including computerized simulation. The event is coordinated by second year medical students and is co-sponsored by SWLAHEC, the public school systems of participating parishes, in partnership with the LSUHSC School of Medicine. Parishes in the SW region are invited to participate on a rotating basis. (See rotation schedule HERE)
High school sophomores, juniors or seniors with a 3.0 GPA or higher, who are interested in becoming a doctor may apply. Students who have previously participated in this event are not eligible.
How do I apply?
You must complete an application and the other required forms, then mail them to SWLAHEC, Attn: Shirlene Bender, 103 Independence Blvd., Lafayette, LA 70506. A copy of the application and other forms are available from your school counselor, or by going on-line to www.swlahec.com and clicking on forms. The application for this program will be available at the school counselor office, or on this website, when school starts.
The following must be included:
- Completed application form
- Emergency Information
- Science teacher recommendation
- Permission to retain information
- LSU Photo Consent
- Parent Permission Form
Because of space limitations, not all applicants in the invited parishes can be accommodated. Student selection will be based on GPA, answers to essay questions on the application, previous participation in health-related programs and recommendations.
