Senior Health Insurance Information Program
Southwest Louisiana Area Health Education Center has been awarded a grant from The Louisiana Department of Insurance, Louisiana Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIIP). The program allows SWLAHEC coordinators to provide information to Medicare eligible seniors who live in region 4 and 5 and to recruit and train SHIIP counselors who are volunteers from the community. SHIIP counselors can help seniors who are new to Medicare by explaining how Medicare works, what healthcare procedures are covered and what is the responsibility of the Medicare recipient. SHIIP counselors also can explain options for private insurance to supplement Medicare and long term care insurance and offer tools to help seniors decide which plan is the right choice for them. Additionally, SHIIP Coordinators can help with filing claims or appeals if payment for a service has been denied.
Volunteer counselors are essential to the success of the program. There are many opportunities to volunteer with the SHIIP program in several different capacities.
